A note from artist Deborah
(whose name means “bee” in
Hebrew) Dyer:
The
liturgy of the Easter Vigil is replete
with reminders of God’s saving love
that embraces all creation. One of my favorite
parts of the Vigil is the Exultet, sung
in celebration of the Paschal Candle. It
is an ancient hymn, dating back to the
4th century. Earlier forms of the Exultet
included the “praise of the bees,”
acknowledging the work of the bees, whose
labor is transformed into the Paschal Candle—the
candle which bears the Light of Christ.
During this season, we are reminded that
Christ’s victory over death transformed
the whole universe—and that all creatures
share in the benefits of God’s boundless
love.
