St. Alphonsus Liguori

St. Alphonsus, founder of the Redemptorists, was described by Pope John Paul II as “a close friend of the people… a writer who focused on what would be of benefit to the ordinary people.” Since Alphonsus’ legacy comes to us through his prolific writings, 111 different works on theology and the spiritual life, he is portrayed here with writing pen, ink, and books close to the cross. He is shown at prayer, for he said, “Of all things you enjoy doing, let praying be the one you enjoy most.” The yucca plants in the foreground shared with St. Dominic brings their presence to Kansas.

St. Dominic

This humble saint, who refused three times to be made bishop, founded the great preaching order of the Dominicans. He holds the Bible as these teachings are of first importance to the order. The dog bearing a torch in its mouth is a symbol for the Dominicans because St. Dominic’s mother, Blessed Joan of Aza, had a vision before Dominic was born of this “dog of God” who would set fire to the world. St. Dominic has the star over his head and is carrying a tall cross, also part of his iconography.
